Overall Thoughts
The Secret of Langton Manor is an episodic print and play escape game set in an old mansion shrouded in secrets and mystery, throughout episode one you search the mansion grounds for information, receiving mysterious artefacts and hunting for clues.
One of the aspects I love about the secret of Langton manor is that it just goes to show that you don’t need the expensive packaging and fancy objects to make a solid set of escape puzzles. I think as enthusiasts we are often spoiled by the development of technology and more intricate and expensive puzzle sets (which I still absolutely love) but Bromelain games but goes to show that the old way of doing things still works.
Upon printing your first episode you are greeted with a multitude of sheets; the first of which explains the background of the story and exactly how to play the game that lies ahead. Once you’ve downloaded the accompanying app, you’re ready to proceed. The app is super simple to use with a 4 digit combination lock comprising of a shape (one for each puzzle) and the 3 digit answer for that puzzle. Should you not know which puzzle you’re on cycling the shapes will show you which puzzle you’re upto or that you need to proceed further to solve the shape.
The contents of the game are both enjoyable and intuitive; the app makes following along with the pages easier. The puzzles range from simple decoding to some real brain scratching puzzles. As always our team got caught up on several puzzles by overcomplicating them and resorting to hints to help us progress, realising just how silly a mistake we made. Once you’ve cut out the pages and sheets there are a lot of elements to the game and at points it felt a tad overwhelming, but this added to the chaos and enjoyment of the game. I would have liked to have seen the story develop more throughout the puzzles but I assume this may come in episode 2.
For a “pay your own price” game this is absolutely worth grabbing; if you can afford to support the team at Bromelain games I highly recommend doing so, to help them keep creating great content but you can download this game for free and support by spreading the word!
Alternatively if you want a taste of their puzzles before committing to the full episode check out “The diary of John” their mini single page puzzle book which is super creative and packs 15-20 minutes of fun puzzling.
